Weather and what it means for planning

Hot dry summers around 28 to 30°C, tempered by the meltemi wind which can be strong enough to close beaches on the exposed north side.

On your Holiday Board, each day shows a forecast once a reliable one exists, which is roughly two weeks ahead. Further out than that we show nothing rather than guessing, because a made-up forecast is worse than none when you are deciding what to pack.

What to pack for Mykonos

  • Something that copes with wind. The meltemi is a real factor and light dresses fight it
  • Two pairs of shoes for evenings, since the old town is cobbled and uneven
  • High factor sun cream, as shade on the beaches is limited and costs money
  • A light wrap for evenings, which cool quickly once the wind picks up
  • Cash for smaller tavernas and beach kiosks

Add these to your plans as bring items while you are setting up the trip and they turn up on everyone’s packing list automatically, with duplicates merged.

An example Mykonos day structure

A workable shape for a 4 to 6 days trip. Copy whichever of these fit onto your own days and ignore the rest.

  1. Day 1Arrival day

Settle in, eat in the old town. Beach clubs can wait.

  2. Day 2South coast beach day

Book a bed in season. Leave early because they fill and the road is slow.

  3. Day 3Old town day

Late afternoon into the evening. Midday is hot and crowded with day trippers.

  4. Day 4Delos

A half day by boat, with fixed departure times. Set the leave time from the boat, not the site.

  5. Day 5Recovery day

    Deliberately empty. Worth planning in.

Practical things worth knowing

  • Euro. Beach clubs are expensive and add service, so agree the split before ordering
  • Taxis are very limited. Buses and pre-booked transfers are more reliable than hoping
  • The wind can close north-facing beaches at short notice, so have a southern alternative
  • Book restaurants in the old town in July and August, and note the reservation name

Getting around

A quad or small car is common but parking near beaches is difficult in season. Buses connect the main beaches to the town and are cheap. Build slack into leave times.

This is the reason leave time exists as its own field on every plan. The start time is when the thing happens. The leave time is when you actually need to be out of the door, and in Mykonos the gap between those two is bigger than people expect.

Money on a Mykonos trip

Mykonos uses the Euro. If your group counts in pounds, set EUR as the local currency and GBP as the home currency when you create the holiday. Every expense then shows both, and the rate is saved with the expense so past spending never shifts when rates move.

At the end, the expense splitter nets everything off into the fewest possible payments.
