The best app for splitting holiday costs depends on what else you need
There are two different jobs hiding inside "who owes what". One is splitting bills with people you live near all year. The other is a week abroad where the money and the plans are the same conversation.
Different tools win those two jobs, and it is worth being clear about which one you are actually doing before picking.
If you just need to split bills, use a dedicated splitter
Splitwise is the one most people mean. It handles flatmates, recurring costs, uneven splits and multiple currencies, and it has done for years. If the thing you want is a running ledger between the same people, that is what it is for and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
The thing worth knowing before you commit is that its free tier tightened in 2025. Reviewers report a cap of around three expenses a day on the free plan, with currency conversion, receipt scanning and itemised splits moved behind a subscription of roughly £4 a month. On a holiday, three expenses a day is about lunchtime.
If it is a holiday, the money is not a separate app
On a trip, almost every expense belongs to something you planned. The boat trip, the villa, the dinner on Thursday. Keeping the spending in one app and the plans in another means typing the holiday in twice and reconciling it later from memory.
Holiday Board puts the spending inside the trip. You log what you paid in whatever currency you paid it, against a holiday that already knows who is on it, and at the end you get the fewest possible payments rather than a web of small debts.
What actually matters when a group settles up
- The exchange rate is frozen at the moment you log the expense, so nobody argues later about which day's rate to use
- Odd pennies go to real people rather than being rounded away, so the split adds back to the exact total
- The settlement is netted down: four people, three payments at most, not twelve
- Someone can be left off an expense they were not part of, without it becoming a separate group
The honest comparison
- Splitting bills all year with the same people: a dedicated splitter, and Splitwise is still the best of them
- A holiday where the plans and the money are the same conversation: Holiday Board, because they are in one place
- One cost split once, right now, with no account: our free cost splitter does that in a browser tab
- Moving the actual money between people: none of these. They all tell you the number and you use your bank
What we do not do
Holiday Board does not move money. It works out who owes what and stops there, because handling other people's payments is a regulated business and a worse product than your banking app already is.
It also has no ledger outside a holiday. If you want to track a flat share in February, this is the wrong tool and a dedicated splitter is the right one.
Questions
- Is there an app that tracks who owes me money?
- Several. For general use, a dedicated bill splitter. For a holiday specifically, Holiday Board keeps the spending attached to the trip it belongs to, so the plans and the money are not in two different places.
- What is the best free way to split holiday costs?
- For a one-off split, our free cost splitter needs no account. For a whole trip, Holiday Board's free tier includes expense splitting and settling up, though a free holiday holds two people.
- How do you handle different currencies?
- Each expense stores the amount in the currency it was paid, the rate at the moment it was logged, and the converted amount. Freezing the rate means the number never moves after the fact.
- Does everyone need to pay for the app?
- No. A Holiday Pass is £6.99 once and covers the whole trip, not a seat on it. Whoever organises pays and everyone they invite gets the full version.
- Can I use Holiday Board just for the money?
- You can, but it would be a strange choice. It is built so that the spending sits next to the plans, and if you do not want the plans a dedicated splitter is lighter.
